Crazy thunderstorm

Yesterday afternoon/early evening we had a severe thunderstorm. The winds weren't so bad, but the amount of rain we got was incredible.
Our house is right next to a drainage ditch, which usually doesn't give us any problems, but since a new subdivision has been planned to be be build there have been modifications. I dont think the engineer took in to consideration the volume of water that would be directed into that ditch, so we were reaching an overflow.
On top of that we had our sewers backup, forcing water up through the shower drain, into our basement. Luckily we caught it while it was just starting to spread, otherwise we could have had some damage. As it was we spent about 2 1/2 hours mopping, wet Vac suctioning, and sterilizing to get rid of the water and smell (yes it did smell like sewage).
Thankfully I was home. I was supposed to have a meeting but that was cancelled and I couldn't get out of town due to roads being flooded anyways. Definitely a night to remember. I'll submit a pic of the drainage ditch (which my mother took). Unfortunately the pic isn't the greatest quality since the lens is VERY dirty (looks like we have fireflies or bigger in the pic hehe).
